This is a collection of some of our favorite websites here at SmilingMonk. We like them for different reasons, but they all have something that we think sets them apart and deserves special attention. None of these companies paid us to add their names to this list or even know we exist for that matter.
Threadless T-Shirts (www.threadless.com) The idea is simple and genius: T-shirts are designed and voted on by users with only the top scoring shirts printed and sold. Threadless sells some of the greatest shirts every created bar-none. I have a collection of 23 and counting. This American Life (www.thislife.org) Every time I listen to This American Life I wonder what idiot invented the television and how he could have ever thought it would be better than radio.
VisualScope Studios (www.visualscope.com) No list of SmilingMonk's friends would be complete without mentioning VisualScope Studios. They are the visionaries who created the website you are looking at now and they are a pleasure to work with.
Kieth Ladzinski Photography (www.ladzinski.com) If you're as big a rock climbing fan as I am you'll love Keith's comprehensive photo collection of the best rock climbers in the world climbing the hardest routes. As a bonus you can take a look at Keith's many non-rock climbing photos as well.
Inc. Magazine (www.inc.com) If I had $5 left to my name, there's a good chance I'd buy the latest edition of Inc. before I bought a loaf of bread. The writing is exciting and relevant, the stories are fresh and interesting, and the magazine has soul from cover to cover. Check out the website, but if you want to experience Inc. Magazine in all it's glory, stop by the news stand and pick one up.
Pandora (www.pandora.com) A great website created by a great guy (featured on the cover of the October 2007 edition of Inc. Magazine). Type in your favorite song or band and Pandora creates a customized radio station playing only that genre of music. Once you start to listen you'll find it very hard to stop.
Leo Burnett (www.leoburnett.com) Leo Burnett was one of the founding fathers of modern advertising. And now his namesake has created one of the most creative and playful websites on the internet. No mention of Leo would be complete without sharing some of his wisdom, shortly before he died he wrote:
"Somewhere along the line, after I'm finally off the premises you may want to take my name off the premises too. But let me tell you when I might demand that you take my name off the door. That will be the day when you spend more time trying to make money and less time making advertising. When your main interest becomes a matter of size just to be big, rather than good, hard, wonderful work."
TED (www.ted.com) A prodigious and eclectic collection of lectures caught on video by some of today's greatest thinkers.
